Day 2 :: What I wore today

Today’s challenge was to take a picture of what I was wearing. It was a lazy kind of day. We went to play with my nephew since the hubby had the day off. A great day to be outside.

366 Day Photography Challenge :: Day 1

To start the New Year off, I decided to challenge myself to capture a photo of each day in 2012. Mainly for me to chronicle my memories and to challenge my creativity. I plan on starting with a photography challenge I found back in the summer time and then go from there. For Day 1, the challenge was to do a self-portrait. I struggled with this one a bit because I didn’t want to just take a photo of myself and be done with it. What I decided to do was photograph objects that make me who I am.

1. My love for design

2. My faith and belief that God has a path for me

My fall garden

So our summer garden did not fair too well in the scorching heat. We did have plenty of cucumbers and basil, however the rest of my plants eventually died off one by one.

I was not going to give up. We increased the height of our above ground garden to be 18″ tall to help with root growth. We purchased more compost/manure mixture and tilled the soil. For our fall garden, we are planting three different types of tomatoes, winter and summer squash, english cucumbers, french beans, onions, butter lettuce, beets, cauliflower, basil, rosemary, two varieties of bell peppers, brussel sprouts and bitter melon. And so far, the garden is thriving. I can’t wait to harvest all the goodies.

Messenger Bag

Here is my first take on a mini messenger bag. It took me a while to figure out how to attach the d-rings. It’s still a work in process on how to attach it but I think it looks great and it’s functional.

My first embroidery & purse

I’ve been following craftgawker for a little while now and love all the creative things that I come across on that site. I want to try them all. One project I was really impressed with was Yadira’s 1st embroidery. It looked gorgeous and sounded so easy to do. But I wanted to do more with the fabric after I was done embroidering it. So I upped the ante and wanted to create a purse with the embroidered fabric. I have never embroidered nor been able to sew a straight line in my life, so it was a challenge I was willing to attempt.

My first goal was to find fabric that was my style. I went to Ikea first but all the prints were just too large. Then I stopped in at Hobby Lobby and I was amazed at the beautiful prints they offered and it was on sale. I had to stop myself from wanting to purchase one of every spool. Since this was my first time, I didn’t want to go overboard. I picked out two of my favorite prints and bought half a yard of each. I then stopped by Michael’s to find floss that matched the colors on the print. While bouncing ideas off with the hubby, he mentioned lining the purse. I didn’t even think about that. Next stop was Jo-Ann’s, where I picked up a few solid prints and zippers. A size 9 inch zipper worked best for clutch I had in mind. Keep in mind, I have never sewn a zipper onto fabric before, so I was a little intimidated by that step.

Then I got to embroidering. I had no idea the different types of stitches there were. I found this blog, which had the best step by step directions with pictures and it was easy. After I finished embroidering all four pieces of fabric, I looked to this blog to help me sew on the zipper to the fabric. I also included a pocket in the purse to fit my smart phone. It wasn’t easy at first, but I got the hang of it. And here is my first embroidered and sewn purse.

Latest Quilled Project :: Train

I’ve been itching to create something new recently. I have a wonderful nephew who is into trains and knows all the names from Thomas & Friends. He has more trains than I can even remember. So I decided to create a quilled train pulling his name. This is my first project venturing out to new colors, 1) because I’m trying to use all the colors from this one pack I had already purchased and 2) I never thought of doing more than the colors that were in my pack, weird, I know. See the photos below.

Our little garden

When we first moved into our house, I wanted a garden. Something I can tend to and care for, that would hopefully feed us. After living here for five years, we were finally ready to break ground in the back yard. Some little background information, our backyard is pretty massive. You can fit another one of our houses in it. We just didn’t know what we wanted to do until now.

So, off to the side of our house, we made plans for an above ground garden. We purchased our kit at Home Depot and got started with planning our vegetable garden. We realized the kit was a great start but wanted all sides to be of equal height, so we had to purchase a couple more planks before we could continue.

In the meantime, we referred to Gardener’s site for a lot of information about gardening, which there was plenty of. After figuring out what plants we wanted, we trekked back to Home Depot to purchase seeds and plants. Unfortunately, I started my seeds before we finished building the garden so I could not use any of them for transplanting. I found that purchasing starter plants was much easier in the planting process or just start the seeds in the ground. Lesson #1 learned.

After we had the soil in and plants planted, we sit back and wait. I check on my garden at least three times a day. It gets pretty windy in the back so I have to make sure the greenhouse doesn’t blow away, which it almost did once.

Lesson #2, learning when to water. I was gauging the need to water based off the look of the top of the soil. If it looked dry, I would water it, which was everyday. Little did I know, I was drowning the plants. A week would go by and my plants looked dire. The leaves were wilting and turning brown and the plants weren’t getting any taller. I did a quick search on YouTube for advice on watering and sure enough I was over watering them. A good trick I learned was to dig in the soil about an inch or more, if the soil is moist, don’t water, if the soil is dry, water. Pretty easy. So now, with that knowledge, most of my plants returned to life. I had a few that did not make it back so I have reseeded. Lesson learned.

I’ll keep you posted with more lessons from this novice gardener. Happy planting!
